Overview

Carl "CJ" Johnson is the main protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. He returns to Los Santos in 1992 after the murder of his mother and becomes central to the revival of the Grove Street Families.

Background

Carl Johnson, commonly known as CJ, is the main protagonist of GTA San Andreas. After spending several years away in Liberty City, CJ returns home to Los Santos following the death of his mother.

Upon returning, he discovers that his former gang, the Grove Street Families, has lost much of its power while corruption, gang violence and drug influence continue spreading throughout San Andreas.

Throughout the story of GTA San Andreas, CJ becomes involved in gang wars, robberies, government conspiracies and criminal operations across Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas while attempting to rebuild both his family and his gang's reputation.

After returning to Los Santos, CJ is harassed by the corrupt C.R.A.S.H. unit and pulled back into gang life. His journey takes him across Los Santos, the countryside, San Fierro and Las Venturas as he rebuilds his influence, exposes betrayals and restores the Grove Street Families.

Grove Street Families

CJ is closely tied to the Grove Street Families through his brother Sweet and childhood friends Big Smoke and Ryder. His loyalty to the gang is repeatedly tested as old friendships turn into betrayal and Grove Street falls into crisis.
