Overview

Thomas "Tommy" Vercetti is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. After spending 15 years in prison following the Harwood Incident, Tommy is sent to Vice City where he builds a powerful criminal empire.

Harwood Incident

Tommy Vercetti originally worked for the Forelli crime family in Liberty City. In 1971 he became infamous after the so-called Harwood Incident, where he allegedly killed multiple men and earned the nickname "The Harwood Butcher".

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Following his release from prison in 1986, Tommy is sent to Vice City by Sonny Forelli to oversee a drug deal. After the operation is ambushed, Tommy begins building his own empire through extortion, property ownership, drug trafficking and organized crime while uncovering the betrayal behind the attack.

Vice City Empire

Tommy forms uneasy alliances with figures such as Lance Vance, Ken Rosenberg and Kent Paul while expanding his control over Vice City. By the end of the story he becomes one of the city's most powerful crime bosses.

Personality

Tommy Vercetti is portrayed as confident, ruthless and highly ambitious. Compared to many later GTA protagonists, Tommy is far more openly aggressive and power-driven, frequently using intimidation and violence to dominate rivals within Vice City.

Despite his brutal reputation, Tommy also demonstrates strong leadership abilities and strategic thinking as he expands his criminal empire throughout the city.

Rockstar Games presents Tommy as a classic rise-to-power crime figure heavily inspired by 1980s gangster films and the culture surrounding Vice City.

Trivia

Tommy Vercetti was voiced by actor Ray Liotta. The character is heavily inspired by Tony Montana from the film Scarface and remains one of the most iconic protagonists in the GTA series.
